ANGELIC UPSTARTS

"Bullingdon bastards"
Year:  2016
Country:  UK
City:  London
Label:  Boss Tuneage
Format:  CD , LP
Tracks:  15
Time:  38 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Oi!

"Bullingdon bastard" is the new album - their first full length in 13 years, featuring 12 cracking new songs which shows the band are as relevant today as they ever were, but which dissappoint anybody because there are no musical changes at all. This was, is and probably it will be the classic ANGELIC UPPSTARTS sound, simple and direct like in 1977. The element which I like the most of its two last albums ("Bullingdon bastards" and "Sons of Spartacus"), is that the band has finally abandoned its attempts with the electronic sound, electronic drums and keyboards. I mean, it's not bad to listen to some albums like "The power of the press" or even "Blood on the terraces" but... (sorry) I musically hate for example its fourth recording entitled: "Still from the heart", which got to sign for the major EMI, but which me and probably many people, we destest that too exagerate synth-pop sound. In these two albums the band has returned to classic rock sound, with songs more punk or more rock'n'roll oriented, but always with that popular feeling, lyrics, attitude, etc. Maybe ANGELIC UPSTARTS has never been a "first class" punk rock band, but they have demonstrated they honestity and contact with the working class and simply... the common people. No rock stars here, just people. Nothing more

"Sons of Spartacus"
Year:  2002
Country:  UK
City:  London
Label:  CO
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  15
Time:  45 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Oi!

I think not to be wrong If I affirm this is for me my favourite ANGELIC UPSTARTS album ever and probably it will be it. I like very much the band abandoned its synth-pop / eletronic sound as old albums and decided to make an album of pure and simple rock'n'roll. Perhaps some tracks sound more punk and other ones more hard rock, but the balance is almost perfect. I think they are not a high technical musicians, in fact, is not necessary, but the work in the studio and the production make justice with this kind of songs. Many punk or oi! bands have recorded some album hard rock oriented, right, this is time is for ANGELIC UPSTARTS and they have made perfect: guitars, riffs, more guitars... great.

"bombed out"
Year:  1991
Country:  UK
Label:  Roadracer
Format:  CD , LP
Tracks:  10
Time:  30 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Oi!

Quite underrated and almost forgot album is this "Bombed out" issued in the fatale and catastrophic year of 1991, the year that "Punk Broke" and the scene became smaller than underground until perhaps 1995 when wind blew again. Commercially it was a complete failure and almost nobody knew even its issue, but strictly musical is not bad too. Simple, easy and direct Oi! music without electronic or synth sounds and effects but rockin sound and truly charged of socialist ideas, principles and working class pride.

"Blood on the terraces"
Year:  1987
Country:  UK
City:  London
Label:  Link
Format:  CD
Tracks:  10
Time:  30 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Oi!

Despite this aggressive and violent cover, where appears a crowd of angry hooligans, drunk and possibly drugged. "Blood on the terraces" is one of the most melodic, soft and mainstream production albums of all Angelic Upstarts discography. Despite this sound (in my opinion) overly soft and melodic, the album is very good and the lyrics of Mensi (vocals) as always are great.

"The power of the press"
Year:  1986

Tracks:  12
Time:  34 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Oi!

Angelic Upstarts were and are still an English Oi! band formed in South Shields in 1977 during the punk rock and new wave explosion. The band espoused an anti-fascist and socialist working class philosophy, and have been associated with the skinhead subculture. More than 3 decades after its release, their debut single, "The Murder Of Liddle Towers", was included in Mojo magazine’s list of the best punk rock singles of all time. The first albums were more crude and noisy, but at late 80´s decade the band adopted an hyper-clean and well produced sound which reminded the synth-pop bands like Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode or OMD. The musical base, structure was still oi! music but not the sound, even they changed the classic drums for an electronic drums to recorded the last 3 albums. Despite this synth-pop influence I have to admit that "The power of the press" was / is a good album, with great chorus and intelligent lyrics. How to labeled this? melodic oi! ? or perhaps oi! / pop? anyway is quite well done. good.

"Reason why?"
Year:  1983
Country:  UK
City:  London
Label:  Mad Butcher
Format:  CD , LP
Tracks:  12
Time:  36 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:         Oi!

This is probably the most famous and popular Angelic Upstarts album, with a sound completely new wave, electronic drums, slightly distorted guitars and melodic and soft voices. Although this format or even completely new wave synth pop, Angelic Upstarts continue to launch political messages against injustice, inequality, etc.. I have to confess that the first time I heard it I did not like at all. But over the years more and more like it, and I value it more. Ah, don´t forget to say here we find the super-hit "Woman in disguise", present also in several oi! and punk compilations of early 80s.

"still from the heart"
Year:  1982
Country:  UK
Label:  Universal Music
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  10
Time:  30 min.
Genre:  electronic
Style:        New Wave

Take one look at the song titles: "Flames of Brixton," "Action Man", "Here Comes Trouble" and you'd expect Angelic Upstarts' 1982 effort "Still from the heart" to crackle with the same punkish, Oi! energy that typified its initial releases. The streak of protest is still strong, to be sure. But by this point, the Upstarts had embraced a larger sonic palette. Tentative electronic, synthpop and new wave influences, inflections of dub and expressive horn sections are all over the album, which often make it sound like Joe Jackson's 1980s pop experiments or the social pop of Matt Johnson and The The. These tendencies definitely date Still from the Heart at points. However, its fiery heart definitely still burns, as the rousing, Clash-style chorus to "Never Say Die" proves. In the thoughtful "Soldier," the Upstarts personify one British infantryman caught up in Ireland's never-ending civil war. He's bound by duty, but misses his kin. And yet, in the end, he makes the ultimate sacrifice for "those who call him murderer not friend." It's seven minutes of martial snare drums and surging, foreboding keyboard rhythm, and there isn't a wiry punk power chord for miles. But "Soldier" might be most effective thing on the record, proving that the real power of protest music comes not from patch chords and guitar picks, but meaningful social comment and rousing storytelling.
