"Enema of the State" is the third studio album by american punk-rock band BLINK-182. Produced by Jerry Finn, the album was released on June 1, 1999, in the by MCA records. After an long series of performances at various clubs and festivals and several indie recordings throughout the 90s, BLINK-182 first achieved popularity on the "Warped Tour" and in Australia following the release of their sophomore effort "Dude Ranch" (1997) and its rock radio hit "Dammit". In 1998, the band fired former drummer Scott Raynor during an exhaustive touring schedule and he was replaced by Travis Barker, drummer of The Aquabats. To record their third record, Blink-182 turned to veteran punk rock producer Jerry Finn, who previously worked on Green Day's breakthrough album, "Dookie" (1994). I'm not sure BLINK-182 to appear on this net-zine you are reading (Punk.Cat), because obviously the philosophy of this band is not punk at all... of course. But I must admit that emotionally marked my generation (90s decade) and I think we can all agree that strictly musical BLINK-182 are very good and talented. They are just 3 musicians and it seems that there are 5 or 6. Particularly the drums player, I think he has a full and complete talent to master their instrument. This is not the typical Pennywise clone: simple, short, direct and predictable. The drums makes an admirable endless of changes and complications, honestly. And all songs (12 tracks) are made with hook, originality and energy, dynamism. But of course this is melodic hardcore, not "new york hardcore" neither "crust" and nothing similar. This is an hybrid = Pop + Punk. So, anybody expect to listen to rebellion, reivindication or political consciousness. Pop is optimistic, pacifist and almost naif, but not rebel. Anyway I think is a great album in its genre.

"California"
Year:  2016
Label:  BMG
Format:  CD , LP
Tracks:  14
Time:  40 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Pop Punk

California is another aging pop punk release from the kings of the genre. Whether or not that interests you is a different story. For the most part, Blink-182 is the only band who have been doing so consistently without too much experimentation.
Much better than 2011’s Neighborhoods, it sees Mark Hoppus, Travis Barker and Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba actually wanting to play music together. The enjoyment is apparent regardless of the success of the song. Founding ex-member Tom DeLonge offered a more serious contrast to Hoppus’s playful adult youth. However, in later years, the two styles grew further apart eventually hitting the breaking point. Skiba, on the other hand, compliments Hoppus in just about every way. Too well maybe. The vocal harmonies are spot on and the guitar is unfortunately underplayed.
Hoppus is clearly running the show, which is as it should be. Very much in the vein of side project, it occurs when there is less pushback from other members. Barker maintains his place as one of the best drummers playing music right now while existing in his own universe. His reliable stick work is the most technically appealing aspect of a band based in universal simplicity. That means Hoppus’s bass and Skiba’s guitar can construct basic melodies until they start retreading, which happens a little too often. Although Blink-182 sounds reinvigorated and Hoppus and Barker’s relationship with Skiba does go back years, they are still finding a groove with each other. Skiba’s lyrics provide a darkness Delonge’s did while still ceding to Hoppus’s sometimes generic straightforwardness. A little more input could have beefed up and grounded some of those verses before exploding into their giant choruses.
Pop punk in general should get stuck in your head and there’s no one better at that than Blink. Sometimes a good thing (“Rabbit Hole”), sometimes a bad (“Teenage Satellites”), and sometimes it’s a triumphantly bland song that still lodges into your brain (“Kings of the Weekend”). At its strongest, California’s quicker numbers show what is possible for the forty-something’s. “Bored to Death” knocks it out of the park becoming their biggest hit in years. “The Only Thing That Matters” and “No Future” are legitimately great tracks spotlighting the correct balance of growing up but not too much. They’re releasing arena pop made for teenagers attempting to connect with older fans. For every sixteen-second “Built This Pool,” there’s a slow song like “Home Is Such a Lonely Place.” For every “Brohemian Rhapsody,” a “Los Angeles.” Sadly, the “mature” ones produce the worst results and, at sixteen songs, the album is bloated. Producer John Feldman was not the best choice either. His glossy production works to a fault, but years spent co-writing with bands like 5 Seconds of Summer seem to have dulled his songwriting chops. Hoppus, a more than qualified producer, probably could have done a fine job himself.
California isn’t a perfect record, nor does it need to be. It displays a band getting back on the right page with great energy yet struggling a bit to find equilibrium. Still, Blink-182 provides another angst ridden nostalgia trip, which is something they’ve done constantly for two full decades (*Review written by Nick EP).

So Bruce Lee muses to a Shaolin master when queried on his philosophy of fighting during the opening frames of Enter the Dragon, but the legendary Jeet Kune Do founder might as well have been describing the process by which four fellow dragon aficionados ensconced in the upper reaches of a Chinatown rehearsal loft they sublet with Henry Rollins (and a particularly stouthearted mouse) summoned into being the 1994 hardcore magnum opus Scratch the Surface—a slab of extraordinarily lithe, stylized aggression that fits Lee’s motto “Be like water” better than virtually any hardcore record before or since. And like Lee, when Sick of It All channeled their energies into a dizzying array of concentrated sonic furies, the results instantly rendered a good deal of the band’s contemporaries as obsolete as a goon-portraying extra in a ’70s kung-fu flick.

Truth is, if Sick of It All had called it quits in 1992, the band would likely still be remembered fondly: Blood, Sweat and No Tears and Just Look Around are post-Youth Crew paragons brimming with supersonic, churning riffs, burly breakdowns and fiery lyrical sermonizing. Fortunately for us, Koller Bros and Co. have kept clobberin’, and on Scratch the Surface—to paraphrase fellow Hall of Famers Dismember—they overrode the overture, thanks in no small part to the vim, vigor and boundless inventiveness ex-Youth of Today/Agnostic Front/Straight Ahead bassist Craig Setari brought to the aural mix, the time and resources afforded the band by a controversial major label deal and, most importantly, a willingness to boldly evolve within a then-stagnating scene that did not expect or demand evolution.

From the coiled thump of “Consume” and dissonant thrash ‘n’ pummel of “Insurrection” to the fist-raising title track anthem and what is almost certainly the catchiest song about castrating rapists, like, ever (“Desperate Fool”), Scratch the Surface is not merely a great record; it is a transcendent one by the standards of any and all subsets of extreme music, an assertion borne out by the fact that the 2006 Sick of It All tribute album Our Impact Will Be Felt features enthusiastic Scratch covers from such stalwart heavies as Sepultura and Napalm Death. It is a singular honor to herein usher it into our hallowed Hall of Fame (* Review by Shawn Macomber )

SICK OF IT ALL is a hardcore punk band formed in 1986 in Queens, New York. The band's current lineup consists of brothers Lou and Pete Koller on vocals and lead guitar respectively, Craig Setari on bass, and Armand Majidi on drums. Sick of It All is considered to be a major part of the New York hardcore scene, and has sold half a million records worldwide. Though their 1989 debut album Blood, Sweat and No Tears was a moderate success, Sick of It All did not achieve commercial success until further albums. After the release of their 1992 second album Just Look Around, East West Records saw the band's potential and signed them in 1993. Sick of It All's third and major label debut album, Scratch the Surface, was released in 1994 to critical acclaim, and included the singles "Scratch the Surface" and "Step Down" (the video for the latter single would also be featured in the 1995 Beavis and Butt-head episode "Premature Evacuation"). Their 1997 follow-up Built to Last was also highly acclaimed. Despite the success of Built to Last, Sick of It All was dropped from East West and signed to Fat Wreck Chords in 1998, who released the band's next three albums before being dropped from the label in 2005, when they signed to Abacus Records, a subsidiary of Century Media. This label released their eighth studio album Death to Tyrants in 2006 to positive reviews (Abacus eventually went out of business, though Sick of It All would remain on Century Media, which released the band's next three albums). Sick of It All's latest album, The Last Act of Defiance, was released on September 30, 2014.

Penetration were amongst the first salvo of groups associated with punk. Inspired by a Sex Pistols performance, they formed in 1976 and the following year released their first single, 'Don't Dictate', on Virgin Records. During the next three years, despite line up changes, they released further singles and their debut album 'Moving Targets'. In 1979 they toured the UK to promote the follow up album, 'Coming Up For Air'. It was to be the major tour that would establish them commercially but at their hometown gig, in Newcastle, singer Pauline Murray announced, "This is the last gig that this line up is ever going to do here... I think everything's got to change after a while". The words didn't make it entirely clear but the subsequent emotional rendition of 'all of their old songs' marked the end of Penetration. They played the rest of the set to fans who were stunned (I was in denial and even now, listening to the recording to get the 'split' quote sent a shiver down my spine).  At the same they were excited to be caught up in a moment of such passion. This was breaking news and would feature heavily in the following week's music papers. Thirty years on, Pauline Murray and Robert Blamire are performing as Penetration again. They meet with Eccentric Sleeve Notes on a rainy day in Kentish Town. Punk Rock.

Antisect are a rock band based in London, UK. Their roots are in hardcore/anarcho punk and metal. Formed in 1982 in Daventry, Northamptonshire, UK, their debut album, In Darkness There is No Choice, was released in 1983. 1985's follow up EP, "Out From The Void" has often been cited as a game changer amongst their genre for fusing a raw punk rock style with elements of metal. Antisect are a significant band in the timeline of hardcore punk music, said to have been a major influence upon "black-clad, politically charged punks over the last 30 years". The band address issues including animal rights and social justice, communicating their ideas to a largely punk rock audience, and were among the instigators of the squat venue scene in the mid to late 1980s. During this time members lived the lifestyle of being either on the road or part of the vibrant London squat scene of the time. They toured extensively both in the UK and Europe and though originally splitting up in 1987, the band reformed in May 2011.

SNUFF are a British punk rock band formed in Hendon in 1986. Their name reportedly came about after a long discussion about names ended up with one of them claiming "That's Enough", which was then shortened to SNUFF. The original line-up was Duncan Redmonds on drums and vocals, Simon Wells on guitar and vocals and Andy Crighton on bass, with Dave Redmonds being added to the line-up on trombone before the release of "Flibbiddydibbiddydob". SNUFF have released their material through a variety of independent record labels including their own, "10 Past 12 Records", as well as on "Fat Wreck Chords" a label owned by Fat Mike of NO FX. This one is for my personal taste the best SNUFF album ever. A disk full of punk and hardcore but also influenced for another musical styles such as: pop, mod, ska, oi!, garage, etc. In fact the band is not at all the typical american melodic hardcore band borned in Berkeley mid 90s. They started in 1986 in UK and for example Duncan (the vocalist) was a mod teenager and had an old typical sixtie scooter (below you can see the pic). The band is mostly as a "punk rock band" but its members has never hidden their admiration for the british Mod icons like The Who, Small Faces or The Jam. When they make music often use another instruments like psychedelic keyboards or skatalitic sax and in this album there is also a great Oi! song entitled "Martin" which I think was very well done. We are in front of a rich and varied influenced disk away from the dogmas and labels with a mature sound, drive and air. I am glad to know that SNUFF are still active and recording new stuff in addition to their successful tour for Japan. These guys are very good people.

Where does one start with SNUFF? Revered by many, they're a band with a great ability to churn out novelty tracks (more so in their earlier days, though), the owners of a wonderful guitar sound and one of the best? boards and horns combination to ever grace a punk record. Is that enough? Hopefully it is. However, just to play devil's advocate I will add that in my opinion the band have never really released a great album (Now let's see the comments section below light up!!) despite having all the necessary skills to do so. Here the band remind me a sort of fast The Jam with pop / punk melodies, music and voices. Don't forget another instruments such as: psychedelic keyboards, sax and something more there. An album which almost nobody know and frankly is more than satisfactory.

Snuff. Now that's a seminal punk rock name I didn't think I'd stumble across ever again, after the band announced indefinite hiatus in 2005 and released a best-of collection in the same year. Since their inception in 1986 and throughout much of the 90s, they were arguably one of the most prominent and important punk rock names within the UK, having released a slew of punk rock classics throughout the decade. Snuff were always known for their variety; one song would bring you noisy, buzzing garage punk, the next one would be a melodic rocker, and they'd also dabble their toes in hardcore punk and ska in equal measure.

Well, they're back in 2013 with their tenth studio album "5-4-3-2-1 Perhaps?", their first one in nine years, where that versatility continues as if the past decade simply didn't happen. The band still specialize in vibrant, warm punk rock melodies and vocals that stand halfway between coarse and melodic, offering a characteristically garage-style delivery that's warmed many a heart during the decades that the band were active. They throw curveballs at the listener by breaking into hardcore punk on "Mumbo Jumbo", offer standard Snuff-style buzzing melodic punk on "There Goes The Waltzinblack", and bring in the trumpets and sax on the album highlight "Rate Run". Organs are also occasionally present in evidence of Snuff continuing to expand outside of the safe realms of basic punk rock, which has always been their strength and their unique identifier. Where most bands stick to that one melodic sound, Snuff basically play noisy punk and throw in whatever elements they feel are necessary to create some activity in the soundscapes. Sometimes that's a bright guitar solo, at other times it's a circle-pit inducing pedal-to-the-floor song, sometime's it's toying with Lagwagon style skate punk. It makes sure that Snuff stick out from the hordes of punk rockers out there.

In that sense, "5-4-3-2-1 Perhaps?" is classic Snuff exactly as they've always sounded like. But if there's something it's lacking, it's the classics. Where previous Snuff albums always had a few timeless songs like "Arsehole", "Nick Motown" or "Not Listening", this one only has "Rat Run". The rest of the songs are good, but a little bit disappointing compared to their legacy. But I guess that's often the case with reunion albums like this one. THE THREE JOHNS

"some history"
Year:  1983
Country:  UK
City:  Leeds
Label:  Abstract
Format:   CD , LP
Tracks:  12
Time:  33 min.
Lyrical themes:  anarchism , pacifism
Genre:  rock
Style:         Post Punk

This Leeds, Yorkshire pop punk band, formed on Royal Wedding Day in 1981, set themselves a characteristic precedent by being refused permission to play a "Funk The Wedding" gig because they were drunk. The line-up featured John Brennan (ex-25 Rifles; bass), John Langford (ex-Mekons; guitar) and John Hyatt (ex-Sheeny And The Goys, Another Colour; vocals). They met in Leeds while they were at college, although individually they are from Wales, Belfast and Wolverhampton. A drum machine was used in preference to an extra member, although, ironically, all three musicians were competent percussionists. They signed to CNT Records in 1982 and released two singles, one of which, "English White Boy Engineer", was a reworking of an old Mekons number. The lyrical focus of the song attacked hypocritical attitudes towards South Africa and apartheid, and the group were quickly designated as left-wing rockers, albeit heavy drinking ones: "We all have socialist convictions and obviously that comes through... but we're not a socialist band. We're a group of socialists who are in a band. It's a fine distinction but an important one". They quickly made their reputation via frenetic and comic live shows, even performing a version of Madonna's "Like A Virgin". A legacy of fine singles populated the independent charts, including "Pink Headed Bug", "Men Like Monkeys" and "Do The Square Thing'. 1985"s "Death Of A European" was a New Musical Express Single Of The Week, although by misfortune it emerged in the aftermath of the Heysel football tragedy and hence achieved no airplay. Unfortunately, there was insufficient success to allow the band to give up their day jobs. Langford earned his living as a part-time graphic designer for the Health Education Service, and Hyatt (who designed the band's covers) was a teacher of Fine Art at Leeds Polytechnic. Their debut album, Atom Drum Bop, bore the legend "Rock 'n' Roll versus Thatcherism', and included contributions from schoolgirl Kate Morath on oboe. They worked with Adrian Sherwood on 1987's Never And Always, while 1988"s The Death Of Everything And More was summed up by one critic as "messy, snappy, guttural". After that came a long break in their musical endeavours: "We basically stopped working after our last gig in December 1988. We'd done a US tour which was a total disaster and we didn't speak to each other after that, we were all too busy having babies and things". Hyatt produced an art exhibition at Liverpool's Tate Gallery, and Langford continued to work with the Mekons. They returned with Eat Your Sons in 1990, a concept album dealing with, of all things, cannibalism.

After three albums of metal hardcore or crossover thrash, which gave large financial reports to RDP, the band decided to record the album most punk throughout their discography by both, music and attitude. Musically it is raw and crude crust punk recorded in terrible conditions, dirty, torn, destabilized and ultra-distorted sound. Reminiscent of bands ever: Discharge, Extreme Noise Terror or Doom, but added some more modern elements, sometimes rhythmic changes and speed changes. It's frankly hard to hear the whole album. And it only lasts 30 minutes. noise, noise, noise.

It exist also another "Feijoada accidente" which RDP recorded only covers of brazilian hardcore punk bands. I personally didn't pay attention in this album in 1995, but the true is this another RDP good album. The band made covers even better than the origial songs.
