Las Vulpess was the first female punk band from Bilbao, Spain. The group started their career in the summer of 1980 and became famous after appearing on a state television show called “Caja de ritmos” (“Rythmn Box”) in 1983. “Caja de ritmos” offered TV appearances to new music acts and was broadcast during the children’s programming block. Las Vulpess played their single “Me gusta ser una zorra” (“I love being a slut/bitch/cunt”), causing such an uproar that the show’s director resigned from his post and the show was canceled. How fucking punk rock is that?  Las Vulpess existed long enough to release their most famous track as a 7” (b/w “Inkisicion”) on the Dos Rombos label. In 2003 they played a string of reunion concerts in homage to their drummer, who died in 1993. They reunited again in 2005 to record their only album, “Me gusta ser” (“I like being”). No further reunions have been announced. On the meaning of the band’s name: The word “vulpes” is the Latin term for a female fox —a sly bitch. The idea was that this connotation would go over the heads of most Spaniards, as “vulpes” is not colloquial Spanish but a scientific designation.  The band members were between the ages of 17 and 21 when they got together.
