"Zero"
Year:  1999
Country:  Austria

Label:  Noise Variations
Format:  CD
Tracks:  17
Time:  36 min.
Lyrical themes:  politics , social issues
Genre:  rock
Style:       Grindcore

MASTIC SCUM is an Austrian grindcore band founded in 1992. The band consists of founding members Harry (guitar), Man (drums) and Maggo (vocals, since 2008) and Much (bass, since 2005). They used to write lyrics about social issues, politics, feelings, etc. something like “mincecore”, but has different musical sources from death metal to crust, punk, etc. They released the following three albums: Zero (1999), Scar (2002), Mind (2005). They has also released splits with Agathocles, Rotten Sound, Haemorrhage, C.S.S.O., Senseless, Blockheads, Mixomatosis, Malignant Tumour and Fleshless. Maybe some ones of you ask why I choose this MASTIC SCUM album from 1999. Well the answer is very easy, is my favourite obviously and also the more grindcore album, in the sense of to have short, simple and direct songs. I don't want to say newest albums are bad at all, but they are nearer to Metal and even Industrial music. Is not strange the now already german label "Noise Variations Records" choose this album to  make it, to distribute it and to promote it... pure grindcore friends. "CTRL" (2013) is no doubt a good album but is quite Industrial and Nu Metal influenced and far from ortodox grindcore like early MASTIC SCUM albums. You can listen to five long albums here below in "Other Releases" and to choose of course.

SATANIC SURFERS

First off, some history: SATANIC SURFERS played a major part in the Swedish melodic punk explosion that took place in 1995. Combining strong melodies and fast paced punk with both personal and political lyrics, the band soon reached audiences all over the world. Early influences include bands such as SNFU, RKL and The Misfits. The band was originally founded by Rodrigo and Erik in high school back in 1989 in Lund, Sweden. After having gone through the usual line-up changes during its formative years, their debut EP “Skate to Hell” was recorded in ‘93. After doing the first two pressings by themselves and selling more than 1,000 copies in a couple of months, the EP was re-released by Bad Taste Records in August ‘94, as the first Bad Taste release ever! However, by this time Burning Heart Records had shown interest in the band and the second EP “Keep Out” was released on BHR in September the same year. SATANIC SURFERS released three consecutive albums on Burning Heart Records between ’95 and ’99: “Hero of our Time”, “666 Motor Inn” and “Going Nowhere Fast”, with “Hero of our Time” being their most successful release to date reaching 60,000 plus sales. This was during the golden years of melodic punkrock and the band did numerous successful tours in Europe, Canada and Australia with bands like Millencolin, Lag Wagon, Good Riddance and SNFU. Their extensive touring paid off and they soon had a strong following of loyal fans wherever they went, making them one of the biggest punk-rock bands to come out of Sweden at that time.

Swedish d-beat band formed in 1989 (as Anti-Bofors). Disfear got started in 1989 as Anti-Bofors and became a household name when the Tomas Skogsberg-produced “A Brutal Sight Of War” recieved rave reviews. Since then, Disfear has released three albums and toured – if not the world – at least great parts of Europé, appearing at countless hedonistic rock festivals where drunk people wear funny hats. In 2006 Disfear conquered new territory, when a long awaited tour of USA and Canada finally came about. The new album “Live The Storm” was also recorded over there with Kurt Ballou (Converge) handling the oh so important knob twiddling. And a great sound it is, dense, dark, yet multi-dimensional…

Sincerely I never understood why bands like Green Day became famous in the music world and, in opposite, almost nobody know this four musicians who played and play nowadays under the name of ANTIFREEZE. No to confuse with punk rock more or less melodic or DIY philosophy. Not at all. ANTIFREEZE is a total "normal" rock band from USA which make (in my opinion) very good songs, specially in this album entitled "The search for something more" made by label "Kung Fu Records". During few years I recived some promos from this label ("Kung Fu Records") and I have to admit it has also good bands and good albums too. According I read it seem in USA both, band and label, are quite well known in the hc / punk community, but in Europe not much. Doesn´t matter, despite this detail I recommend to listent to this album for those who like the softer and "poppy" side of punk rock. Good melodies, clean sound, optimism... you know.

"inflammable material"
Year:  1979
Label:  Universal
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  12
Time:  38 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:         Punk

This is the debut and best album ever by the political punk band STIFF LITTLE FINGERS. Most of the album's tracks are about the "troubles" and the grim reality of life in Northern Ireland with the songs containing themes of teenage boredom, sectarian violence, police oppression, unemployent, etc., urging people to "grab it and change it, it's yours" in what became their signature song "Alternative Ulster". The song "Rough Trade" is about the band's view of the music business as being dishonest but have since claimed it is not about the record label which happens to have the same name. In 2001 the major EMI made a CD reissue added two tracks. The reissue also includes the first part of an interview of Jake Burns by Alan Parker (the second part is included in the reissue of Nobody's Heroes. Strictly musical STIFF LITTLE FINGERS is very influenced by bands near to classic rock or Mod music like The Clash, The Jam, etc. making songs not fast or agressive but more classic 1977 sound.

"Nobody's Heroes" is the second album by the political punk band Stiff Little Fingers, released in 1980. It include the hit "Doesn't Make It All Right" which is a cover of a song from The Specials debut album and which was also popular as a "Hay algo aqui que va mal" covered by the basque rock band Kortatu. The first release was made by the record label Crysalis in 1980 (with ten songs) and later, in 1989, was EMI which made and distribute the album plus three bonus song.

"Go For It" is the third album by Stiff Little Fingers released in 1981 by the label "Crysalis". In 2001 there was an edition of this album by EMI which included four tracks as a bonus tracks. In general here the band made a disk more melodic, softer, slower and close to pop, new wave and reggae too, and to be a bit more straightforward, this album is recommended, but is not very enjoyable for a person that has never heard the band before. In other words, one that has heard "Inflammable material" a few times through and other work as well, will enjoy this album about ten times more than one that has maybe heard the singles at the very most. You must love the STIFF LITTLE FINGERS if you want to really appreciate "Go for it". But hey, that´s just my opinion, go ahead and try it out. This is still good music, good artwork and one of the very best bands to ever strike the genre. After this one comes a complete failure album entitled "

"flags and emblems"

Time:  35 min.

Internationalist and Universalist manifesto. This is the reunion album after touring early 90s, and this is the result of the desire to record new material since 1981. The danger with bands reforming and recording after longtime can be that their new material will be seen in a negative light as it doesn't measure up to earlier albums. But this is not the case at all with "flags & emblems", which perhaps has nothing to do with punk rock but closer to alternative rock, indie pop or simply rock'n'roll. Stylistically, the album is back to what SLF do best: solid rock songs with intelligent and original lyrics related to: internationalism, universalism, social issues, politics and also emotional issues. The album was reissued in 2004 with new liner notes and a couple of bonus tracks - a remix of "The Cosh" and an interview with Jake Burns. The interview is an informative listen and covers how the reformation occurred, touring and the controversy about the song "Beirut Moon". The best way to sum this album up is that there are two excellent tracks that would easily make a SLF 'best of,' a fistful of good songs and no one mediocre songs. Though I can to affirmm this is a good album, which maybe was issued in a bad moment, bad place and a bad way, but it continues to be an excellent recording which with the pass of time has become in other essential SLF album.

"get a life"
Year:  1994
Label:  Universal
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  13
Time:  60 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Punk Rock

When these venerable Irish punks joined the early-'90s reunion parade, few gave them any chance of going the distance, especially after a decidedly iffy comeback album, Flags & Emblems (1991). However, a funny thing happened four years later: singer-guitarist Jake Burns figured out how to make those shopworn pop-punk chords ring true again, yielding one of the band's finest outings. The title track's martial denunciation of apathy sets an appropriate back-to-basics tone. Topical pop-punk is the blueprint, with Burns slinging blasts against social complacency ("No Laughing Matter"), police corruption ("Forensic Evidence"), anti-immigrant bias ("Harp"), and the end of Communism ("The Night That the Wall Came Down"). Studio-wise, former Jam bassist Bruce Foxton plays an effective foil to Burns, while drummer Dolphin Taylor's unflagging rat-a-tat-tat keeps the proceedings taut and focused. The production is as crisp and business-like as the songs themselves. Rounding off matters are "unplugged" remakes of the standards "Silver Lining," "Wasted Life," and the later-era fare of "Listen" -- as well as live versions of Foxton's major Jam credit, "Smithers-Jones," and "Alternative Ulster," the single that launched the band's career. Solid melodies and performances enable Get a Life to outstrip the rickety material and execution that usually dogs most returning bands. In this respect, Stiff Little Fingers' story parallels that of the Buzzcocks, who've aged equally well, even if the chart hits don't follow anymore. (*Review by Ralph Heibutzki )

After the complete failure "now then" album (1982), the original members decided to come back in the 90s decade to record several studio albums until this one entitled "tinderbox" in 1997. The true this album keep big similarities with The Clash first era, both music and lyrics (social issues, politics, anti-war, etc.). In the first era and also in the second one SLF has played in a lot of benefit concerts such as: Mandela's Death, Strummerville, Rock Against Racism, Riot Fest, Rock Against Apartheid, Third World and many others, and people and press use to describe SLF as the irish The Clash version. "Roaring Boys" (Parts One & Two) appear like two different songs but they are actually one. This album has issued through several record labels and also with different cover, back, booklet and general artwork,. The newest one was HERE in 2016, but this ONE was made in 2002 through label EMI (Universal Music).

The album has also different order songs list it depends of UK or US issue. However it's still a very good album which continue in the same stylistic music line as its predecessor "thinderbox". Medias and labels continue to describe SLF as a political punk rock band, but the true is this newest recording from 2014, is closer to classic rock than ever, about composition, sound, voices... even the four musicians dress closer to rockers than punks, but perhaps only lyrics still keep ceratin similarity to their roots related to social issues, politics, etc. This time has been the band who was charged to produced the work and no one record label. The whole is simple and classic rock, but despite this facts, this is still an excellent album, with well writen songs, good guitars and brilliant sound. In 2017 it was a re-issue with a complete new artwork and re-mastered sound, which became more crude and raw than the original.   It's only rock'n'roll... but I like it so much.

What a wonderful find! I spent ages trying to track this elusive live set from 1979, often believing that it would be no more than a typical completist fan's token addition to the back catalogue. It is so much more than that. It is a wonderfully recorded tribute to SLF during the year that really mattered - 1979 - and evokes a wonderful feel of being a well recorded bootleg. The performance is intimate, the sound mix almost furiously perfect, and it's great to hear live renditions of tracks from the first 2 albums which have never otherwise made it to CD. These are the deservedly rose tinted glory years for SLF and as such even after the first hearing I feel that it is the best live recording we have - much better than the myriad of reunion shows available. This is, was, and remains the real thing, and as such, SLF should be justly proud that this set remains so relevant 25 years on. Still a class live act, it does amaze to appreciate just how good they were back in 1979. Just try out 'Suspect Device', 'Wait and See' and 'Johnny Was, not to mention 'Breakout'. So if you are a fan, you must add this to your collection. I am sure that it will immediately become one of your ultimate SLF recordings !

This live performance collect songs of their three first albums (closer to punk rock) and also from their (then in 1991) newest album "flags and emblems", closer to alternative rock, melodic pop, etc. Surprisingly the quality sound is excellent, the whole (vocals and instruments) are very clear and good, and it's not strange at all somebody had the idea to become this concert on physical format.
