"back to the roots"

Tracks:  14
Time:  40 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Punk Rock

"Back to the roots" is the 2014 studio release by prolific first punk rockers The Vibrators. They are one of those bands that just won’t die and upon release of this record I’m glad they haven’t. This The Vibrators playing mid-tempo pop punk with a hard rock influence better than any other band out there. They’ve has had their ups and downs over the past few years, with original singer Knox having left the band due to health reasons as a touring member. He was replaced by Nigel Bennett who took over, quitting shortly after with Darryll Bath now filling in. With cover art and a title lifted from their classic debut Pure Mania, Punk Mania promises a return to the band's original sound. The album is produced by original bassist Pat Collier, with a sound cleaner and more contemporary compared to the gritty sonic assault of their first LP. Pure Mania was a punk masterpiece so it’s not fair to compare the two releases, as Punk Mania is not a ground breaking record like the original. The sound and subject matter is definitely derived from the original album, although with the title Punk Mania I was hoping for a grittier punk album with songs that sound closer to their more aggressive early material such as ‘Stiff Little Fingers.’ The Vibrators succeed with a return to the punk and hard rock sounds of their youth without ever sounding as though they are trying to recapture their youth. With Knox now in his late 60’s the punk on this album is naturally a little mellower and at times lacks the dynamism of their early classics. That being said they still write catchy rock songs and Knox sounds great! "Love Like Diamonds" is reminiscent of "Sweet Sweet Heart" in phrasing and vocal delivery. "She’s a Girl" is a tender love song with an old-school 60’s pop rock aesthetic, it is one of the more mellow tracks on the album. The next track Knox picks up the pace with the rock n’ roll track "Rats," Knox oozes swagger with the chorus “Just a big fat rat / One too many rats.” (*this review was writen by ).

New Vibrators albums don't come along too often -- this is their first since 2002's Energize, and their first, too, since frontman Knox returned from a four-year lay-off. But with Nigel Bennett and the rhythm section of Eddie Hedges and Pat Collier joining him, it's business as usual for one of the longest-lived of all original U.K. punk bands, kicking off with the punchy buzzsaw of "DNA Robot," and driving on through 13 more slabs of classic Vibes volatility. There's something so reassuring about it as well -- other survivors from their era may have retained their original sound, but the Vibrators are one of the few who have kept it fresh. Still lacing their punch with humor, still packing the flamboyant minimalism that was their most dramatic calling card, the Vibrators have also hung onto that innate sense of melody that made "Baby Baby" such a blessing all those years ago. And so "We're the Dead," "Darkest Before Dawn," "Nightmare Town," and "The Altar at Midnight" lead a pack that slips effortlessly in alongside the best of the band's past output, and there's only one thing here for you to disagree with. The album closes with a song called "Everything I Do Is Wrong." But it isn't. Everything's right.

"garage rock covers"
Year:  2009

Format:  CD , LP
Tracks:  14
Time:  40 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:         Garage Rock

Despite the second THE VIBRATORS album entitled "V2" is one of the best but the best, this covers collection from 2009 and entitled simply "garage punk" is truly a very good recording. The goal was to search for and to discover the old gemms which could be the roots of punk rock, early 70s or even during the 60s decade. Something similar did Ramones in 1993 with the album "acid eaters", a clear hommage to forgotten bands from that decade. THE VIBRATORS did exactly the same in this album and frankly the final result is more than satisfactory but very good. There are true hits like "7 and 7 is" (Love), "Hey Joe" (Jimmy Hendrix), "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)" (also covered by The Damned), "Brand New Cadillac" (covered by The Clash in its "London calling" album) or "Psychotic reaction" (Count Five), to just mentions some of them. "Garage punk" like "acid eaters" (Ramones) could be also a kind of hommage to that already legend compilation entitled "Nuggets" and its four albums and also reviewed in this blog. High quality music and interesting to know what are the roots of hardcore / punk community before 1977. Highly recommended

First THE VIBRATORS attempt to record a covers compilation album, and the result was more than satisfactory, very good. No surprises here, just punk rock songs written in 1977 by famous and legend bands such as:  Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, Ramones, Dead Boys, The Saints, UK Subs, Sham 69 and more until twenty songs, each one per band. Before said there is no surprises at all, but If you simply like 1977 style here there is a kind of "the best of...". Good album too.

Recorded in 1998 on Germany's label "Empty records", The Vibrators deliver a very likeable album of their old school hooky punk. First, Buzzin' is not a compilation but rather, a proper album. Second, it's one of their better latter day releases. The Vibrators sound energized and very much like they did in their heyday. A solid album and highly recommended for fans of The Vibrators. Controversial album due their lyrics a little bit sexist, homophobic and perhaps also macho. In fact, cover and back give us an idea how is this "buzzin'".

The Vibrators' "hunting for you" was released on UK's trrough three record labels in 1994, 2003 and 2020. First, it is not a compilation album, it is a proper album. Second, "hunting for you" was the last record during a long steril period for The Vibrators which lasted almost twelve years. Definitely an excellent album, but which passed unnoticied then. Underrated and forgot recording, so much better output available from 1976-1982 and from 1994 on. This release in 1994, started The Vibrators' resurgence. This is where one should start to explore after you wear out their first three LPs. "Hunting for you" is perhaps more hard rock oriented, but Brilliant.

after five albums which became in a complete gasps and both, audience and medias, considered them as to exagerate sophisticated, soft, melodic and even electronic pop music, The Vibrators entry into adulthood turning to roots of classic. For the album the band also incorporated the utilisation of sax and piano, which gave a more vintage sound. Neither classic rock nor new wave, but an amazing, simple and direct pop punk.

"V2" is the second studio album by the punk band THE VIBRATORS, released in 1978 on Epic Records and generally considered its best album ever. It was their most successful album, reaching No. 33 in the UK Albums Chart. The single "Automatic Lover", taken from the album, was the only THE VIBRATORS’ single to reach the UK Top 40 where it reached No. 33. It earned the band a TV appearance on the prime-time TV show Top of the Pops. Some of the songs from this album and the previous album "Pure Mania" were combined to form the american album "Batteries Included", released by CBS Records in 1980. It was packaged together with "Pure Mania" by Track Records in 2002, and has recently been re-issued by Captain Oi! Records with bonus tracks "Judy Says (Knock You in the Head)" and "Pushing Too Hard"on CD format. Despite some celebrity sites like "Wikipedia" or even "Discogs" describe this album as a mix with punk and new wave, the true is this is nothing to do with "new wave" or pop like other THE VIBRATORS albums. This is pure punk rock even more irreverent, noisy and acid than its debut "Pure mania". Here we can to find true anthems such as: "Automatic Lover", "Troops of Tomorrow" (covered later by The Exploited), "Destroy" (covered later by GBH) or "Pure Mania" (this song was not appeared in the album under the same name).

"Ar Cànan, Ar Ceòl, Ar-A-Mach" is an album by the anarcho-punk band Oi Polloi. It was released in 2006 by the band on CD and on vinyl in 2007. This is the first full-length rock LP sung entirely in Gaelic since Runrig released their "Play Gaelic" LP in 1979. This is very Oi Polloi in style musically but better than much of their recent stuff. Its an interesting debate the relevance of local languages and how to keep them real. Oi Polloi have nailed their black flags to the mast of Gaelic with some conviction and released this CD by themselves all in Gaelic.

"Omnicide" is an anarcho-punk 7" EP, by the band Oi Polloi. It was released in 1991 by "Words of Warning Records". The initial run of the record sold out and was never re-released. It has been commented by the band that they were not happy with the way this record turned out (Deek's vocals in particular are very unusual), which led to the re-recording of "Victims of a Gas Attack" and the tracks "Dealer in Death" and "Die for BP" being rewritten as "John Major, Fuck You!" and "Let the boots do the talking" respectively. These tracks can also be found on the "Six of the best" compilation CD. Cover comes in the form of a 16 page booklet.

"In defence of our earth"
Year:  1990
Label:  Words of  Warning
Format:  LP, CD
Tracks:  11
Time:  34 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:         Punk Thrash

This "In defense of our earth" is probably one the best OI POLLOI albums recorded ever but not the best. This is my personal opinion. But it is curious that in 1990, the album went unnoticed by most of the hardcore / punk community, almost nobody spoke about it. OI POLLOI take risks and move away from the typical punk and oi! music, basically to take influences from thrash-metal, but also folk, spoken words, etc. The format vinyl was really beautiful and included a booklet with lyrics and some views of the band. The aesthetics of the booklet iwas entirely of old fanzine (paper, cut and paste), but the cover and back-cover of the album have some hippie, psychedelic or even eco-pacifist influences. Anyway was and is a great album which I recommend for those who like the band and the genre.

TOXIC EPHEX come from Aberdeen in the north of Scotland. They got together in 1979 and made the vinyl debut on the "Bullshit Detector" compilation LP on Crass records in 1982 with the track Police Brutality with a kind of moderate melodic punk rock. They released their first 7”, the classic "Fallout Shelter" on local Aberdeen record label "Green Vomit records" in 1986. First few copies that appeared had a hand made black and white sleeve glued together by the band themselves as they could not wait for the proper sleeves to arrive! Also on Green Vomit was the bands debut album which was a split record with Edinburgh’s legendary anarcho punk band Oi Polloi. The band went on to release a few other singles over the years and one full length album. Over the last few years (2010) the band have been quite active and played a few live gigs again in Scotland. The band reformed originally in 1999 with Frank Benzie being replaced on guitar. The band embarked on a mini tour on Scotland with The Men They Couldn't Hang as well as returning to their second home, Shetland. This reformation soon fizzled out with Fred leaving. A completely new lineup was put together with only Dod Chiz and Frank remaining from the original lineup. This incarnation played their famed comeback gig with the Dead Kennedys in Aberdeen. The band soon split again, but were to reform with Fred and Mikey again for their 25th anniversary. The band now regularly host one off gigs. In 2006, Runnin Feart' fanzine released TOXIC EPHEX's first new recording in over 15 years, the 7" single "Civilised". Topplers records from Scotland were so impressed that they have gone on to reissue most of their back catalogue, with plans afoot to re-released everything on a double CD set.
